2014 Annual BLR Storytelling Festival
It’s Storytelling Time . . . !
The Blackstorytelling League of Rochester, N.Y. held our annual storytelling festival on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Wilson Foundation Academy, 200 Genesee Street, Rochester, N.Y. from 6pm to 8pm.
The theme of our festival was “Preserving the Minds and Bodies of our Children.” Accordingly we featured two youth storytellers mentored by Robert Ricks, as well as a young violinist.
BLR members also presented a staged presentation in honor of The Brown Brothers gospel group and the struggles and triumphs of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, “People of Faith Taking on their Freedom.” Guest vocalist Dec. Melvin Snead, Sr. provided wonderful vocal accompaniment to the reading.
BLR members Robin Nowell, Gwendolyn Glenn, Dr. David Anderson/Sankofa and D’lores Simmons shared insightful and timely stories.
The 2014 recipient of the James and Bessie Hamm Civic Award was Sister Rosa Wims.
We thank all of those who attended this year’s Festival and especially the kind and loving support of the members of the Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of Western NY who traveled from Buffalo, NY to be with us!
All those in attendance left with a smile on their faces and a story on their hearts…..
